About the Blog

An archive of practical effects on film and television of the last few decades; from rubber prosthetics to puppets, animatronics and stopmotion miniatures. The title is so named 'Monsters On Screen' as that's typically what special makeup effects goes to making; monsters!

Each article attempts to be as thorough as possible about the special makeup effects in whatever film or television series that it's about. What little criteria we have is more mundane makeup effects  - gore and injuries, fatsuits, aging, historical likenesses, realistic deformities, etc - are typically excluded. No disrespect to the hard work, but it's not as fun to talk about.

Additionally, some films - and their monsters - are not included as they have already been covered on other websites already. Any film that has been solidly covered already on the Monsterlegacy blog, such as Alien, Predator, The Fly, The Thing, etc will not be be covered here.

Nor are most 'kaiju' films covered here, as solid image galleries of the Godzilla, Gamera and King Kong films are already present on sites such as Wikizilla. Most 'tokusatsu' productions are also excluded for a combination of having enough wikis covering them, the 'monsters' often being obviously costumes, and the fact there are so many of these shows.

Sources for quotes, information and sometimes images, are given in each article; typically from magazines such as Fangoria, Cinefex, Cinefantastique, etc. Many images also are found in behind the scenes featurettes, or on makeup artists' personal accounts. No ownership is claimed and this blog is just a hobby project for fun, not for profit.

A final note; this is not a 'review' blog, and there is no regard for spoilers or content warnings; if you want to watch the films after seeing the makeup effects, IMDB and Letterboxd should be your next stop and you can decide from there.
